Master bathroom renovators are creating spaces that are outfitted for two, according to the 2019 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study,* which found that double sinks are on the rise (69% in 2019, up from 66% in 2018) among those who updated their sinks. Undermount sinks are the clear favorite (64%), followed by drop-in (16%) and vessel (11%).
To match this set up, more than half of those replacing their mirrors during master bathroom renovations are installing two (54%). A surprising 7% opt for three or more mirrors in their master bath! However, master showers are increasingly set up for one, with dual showerheads declining slightly from 28% in 2018 to 23% in 2019.
Medicine cabinets are also having a moment. Among the 31% of renovating homeowners upgrading their medicine cabinets, two in five install a custom or semi-custom cabinet (40%). Many are opting for premium features like mirrors on the inside (34%), lighting on the outside (18%) and inside (13%), hidden plugs (17%) and anti-fog systems (12%).
When it comes to style, master bathrooms are seeing a significant shift. Among the 89% of homeowners who change their master bathroom style during a renovation, transitional and modern styles are gaining popularity, both increasing to 21% and 20% in 2019, respectively (each up five percentage points from 2018). Contemporary style fell from 23% in 2017 to 16% in 2019 and traditional from 14% in 2018 to 9% in 2019. Farmhouse style peaked in 2018 at 7%, but fell by nearly half in 2019 to just 4%.
